Full-time Senior Staff Nurse – Operation Theatre (OT)
Job Summary
A Senior Staff Nurse in the Operation Theatre is responsible for providing safe, sterile, and efficient nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. The nurse assists surgeons and anesthetists, supervises OT staff, maintains infection control standards, and ensures proper functioning of surgical equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Pre-Operative Responsibilities
Prepare the operation theatre for scheduled surgeries.
Ensure sterility of instruments, equipment, and OT environment.
Check patient identity, consent forms, and surgical site.
Prepare surgical instruments, sterile packs, and consumables.
Assist anesthetist in preparing anesthesia equipment and drugs.
- Intra-Operative Responsibilities
Assist the surgeon during surgical procedures.
Perform duties as scrub nurse or circulating nurse.
Maintain strict aseptic and sterile techniques.
Monitor patient condition during surgery with the anesthesia team.
Handle surgical instruments, sutures, and equipment efficiently.
Maintain accurate counts of instruments, sponges, and needles.
- Post-Operative Responsibilities
Assist in transferring the patient to recovery room / ICU.
Monitor patient condition immediately after surgery.
Ensure proper documentation of surgical procedures.
Send specimens to laboratory when required.
- Supervision & Coordination
Supervise junior nurses and OT technicians.
Coordinate with surgeons, anesthetists, and other departments.
Maintain OT schedules and ensure smooth workflow.
Provide guidance and training to new staff.
- Equipment & Inventory Management
Ensure proper functioning of OT equipment.
Maintain and check surgical instruments.
Monitor stock of OT supplies, sutures, and sterile materials.
Report equipment malfunction immediately.
- Infection Control & Safety
Follow hospital infection control protocols.
Ensure proper biomedical waste disposal.
Maintain OT sterilization standards.
Follow safety protocols for staff and patients.
Qualifications
B.Sc Nursing / GNM Nursing
Registered Nurse with State Nursing Council
Certification or experience in Operation Theatre Nursing
Experience
3–5 years experience in Operation Theatre
Experience in handling major and minor surgeries
Key Skills
Surgical assistance skills
Knowledge of sterile techniques
OT equipment handling
Emergency response skills
Leadership and team supervision
Good communication and documentation
