PEDIATRICS & NEONATOLOGY

  • The Department of Paediatrics offers comprehensive primary well-child and ill-child care as well as consultation. It is concerned with the health of infants, children and adolescents, their growth and development. A multidisciplinary team of general paediatricians, paediatric nurses and nutritionists also provide paediatric care.
  • It has a well-equipped Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

SERVICES OFFERED:

  • The following services are offered in the department of paediatrics daily
  • 1. OUT-PATIENT services:
    Children attend the paediatric OPD which functions from 8.30 A.M. to 5.30 P.M. on all weekdays. The OPD has facilities to provide treatment like Nebulization, Injections and also has the necessary equipment to provide emergency care when required.
  • 2. IN-PATIENT services :
    Children are admitted to our child-friendly wards.
  • 3. Immunization services:
    All children born in our hospital are offered BCG, Hepatitis B and OPV in the ward itself before discharge. Older children are immunized with vaccines as in the National Immunization schedule. Optional vaccines are also being given in our centre. Walk- in- optional vaccination is also available in our centre
  • 4. Growth monitoring:
    Weight, length and height are measured for all children coming to OPD and charted from WHO –IAP growth charts
  • 5. Development screening:
    Using TDSC development is screened for all children coming to OPD
  • 6. ICU services:
    All sick children who cannot be maintained in the ward including ventilator services are managed in PICU.
  • 7. School health services:
    Department supports surrounding schools for school health services.
  • 8. Community camps:
    We conduct camps at distant places for underprivileged children who cannot come to the hospital.
  • 9. Special Clinics:
    We have separate clinics for high-risk newborns, asthma, cardiology, neurology, and haematology on specific days in OPD.

PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (PICU)

  • The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit is a specialized unit of the Department of Paediatrics that caters to the needs of sick children requiring intensive, round-the-clock monitoring and care. The PICU is equipped with state-of-the-art ventilators to provide both invasive and non-invasive modes of ventilation like CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) to the most critically ill children. Facilities to do bedside ultrasonography, and ultrasound-guided central line insertions are also available at all times and are utilized to effectively manage patients in select situations. The ICU is also manned by Consultants in Paediatrics who are also simultaneously trained in the management of critically ill children. The supportive staffs include senior staff nurses and junior nurses who are trained to handle emergent situations and provide an excellent point of care. A dedicated team is available round the clock to monitor the progress of patients and intervene at the earliest. We also handle post-operative pediatric patients from other specialities.

DIVISION OF NEONATOLOGY

  • The division of Neonatology is a tertiary care unit equipped with state-of-the-art facility meeting national standards and covered round the clock by doctors and nurses trained in neonatology. The unit provides routine newborn care to all babies born in this hospital as well as life-saving treatment for premature, low birth weight and critically ill neonates as young as 28 weeks both inborn and outborn.

NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (NICU)

  • Our NICU is equipped with servo-controlled radiant warmers for continuous temperature maintenance, state-of-the-art multi-channel monitors and Ventilators, Bubble CPAP, Phototherapy units, digital infusion pumps and complemented by round the clock laboratory and biomedical services, bedside ultrasonography. Well trained nursing staff, consultants provide 24×7 care. The unit also provides pre and post-operative care for neonatal surgical emergencies.

NEONATAL SCREENING SERVICES

  • Our department emphasizes preventive aspect of newborn care as an inseparable and invaluable component of neonatology. We provide Immunization and universal screening programmes to detect hearing loss, hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, critical congenital heart disease and metabolic disorders for the newborn babies.

NEWBORN FOLLOW UP SERVICES

  • All newborn babies are followed up till 1 month of age and care is then transferred to the Pediatrics Department. All high-risk preterm and term babies discharged from NICU get a comprehensive neurodevelopmental follow-up till 6 years of age, including developmental, nutritional, speech and language and ophthalmological assessments.

PROCEDURES

  • Many of the tests, procedures, and monitoring that occur in the Department of Neonatology can be very intimidating. But every piece of equipment and every procedure performed is there to help your new-born get better. These tests and procedures are performed with equipment made especially for new-borns, and every effort is made to ease any anxiety and discomfort your baby may experience. Some of the treatments and procedures are:
  • Care of extreme premature and low birth weight babies
  • Non-invasive ventilation, conventional ventilation
  • New-born Screening (Ultrasound, Echocardiography, Hearing assessment & Congenital hypothyroidism, and metabolic disorders
  • Resuscitation team available for in house and surrounding birthing centres (24/7, all holidays.)
